Biography and Education
Raju Balakrishnan serves as Professor of Management and Dean of the College of Business (COB) at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Prior to starting this role in February 2013, he was Senior Associate Dean in the College of Business and Behavioral Science at Clemson University, where he served on the faculty and administration for nearly 19 years. He has also served on the faculty at Tulane University and has taught in the Executive MBA program at Tulane and the University of Georgia.
Under Dr. Balakrishnan’s leadership, COB has experienced enrollment growth of over 20% and credit-hour growth of over 33% thanks in part due to several curricular and program initiatives as well as new partnerships with universities in China, India, Taiwan, and Jordan. The college has also introduced several new inter-disciplinary programs with other colleges on campus and signed articulation agreements with leading community colleges in the region. In June 2015, COB started offering its first non-degree certificates targeted towards working professionals. The number of scholarships available to COB students has also increased significantly due to several new endowments and gifts.
Dr. Balakrishnan earned his Ph.D. in Management from Purdue University, M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Kentucky, and a B.E. with honors in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Madras in India.
Dr. Balakrishnan is the lead author of the textbook Managerial Decision Modeling: Business Analytics with Spreadsheets and has published extensively in leading academic journals such as Decision Sciences, Production and Operations Management, European Journal of Operational Research, IIE Transactions, and Computers & Operations Research. His primary teaching interests include spreadsheet-based decision modeling, business statistics, and operations management. He serves as senior departmental editor of Production and Operations Management and served as secretary of the Production and Operations Management Society during 2006-08. He has been recognized multiple times for teaching excellence at both Clemson and Tulane, and has received several research awards including best paper awards from the Decision Sciences Institute and the Institute of Industrial Engineers.
Dr. Balakrishnan is active in the local business and non-profit community and serves on the boards of two prominent non-profit service organizations.
